The active ingredients in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin, extracted from milk thistle, is known to have antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, it has been traditionally used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders, boost breast milk production, prevent and treat cancer, and even protect the liver from snake bites, alcohol, and other environmental poisons.

Scientifically proven benefits of milk thistle.

  • Milk thistle protects your liver
It is regularly used as a complementary therapy by people who have liver damage due to conditions such as alcoholic liver disease , nonalcoholic fatty liver disease , hepatitis , and even liver cancer. It is also used to stimulate and protect the liver from the effects of drugs and toxins such as amatoxin, which is produced by the death cap mushroom and is fatal if ingested.
  • It stimulates bile secretion and is indicated for gallbladder problems and cholelithiasis.
  • May help prevent age-related decline in brain function
Milk thistle has been used as a traditional medicine for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's for over two thousand years. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties mean it is potentially neuroprotective and could help prevent the decline in brain function that you experience as you age.
  • Milk thistle may protect your bones
Milk thistle has been shown in experimental test-tube and animal studies to stimulate bone mineral uptake and possibly protect against bone loss.
  • It may improve cancer treatment
It has been suggested that the antioxidant effects of silymarin may have some anticancer activity, which could be helpful for people undergoing cancer treatment. Some animal studies have shown that milk thistle could be useful in reducing the side effects of cancer treatments. It may also make chemotherapy work more effectively against some types of cancer and, in some cases, even destroy cancer cells.
  • May boost breast milk production
One known effect of milk thistle, from which it gets its English name, is that it can boost breast milk production in nursing mothers. It is believed to work by producing more of the milk-producing hormone prolactin.
  • It could help treat acne (and skin problems in general)
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. It has been suggested that oxidative stress in the body may play a role in the development of acne. Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, milk thistle may be a useful supplement for people with acne.
  • Milk thistle may lower blood sugar levels for people with diabetes
Milk thistle may be a useful complementary therapy for managing type 2 diabetes. It has been discovered that one of the compounds in milk thistle may work similarly to some diabetes medications, helping to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar.
Use:
Eat 1-2 teaspoons daily.
Do not heat.
Store it at room temperature and protected from light.
Special precautions:
It has not shown any side effects and can therefore be used by most people. It may have a mild, transient laxative effect.
Milk thistle is generally considered safe. However, pregnant women, those allergic to the Asteraceae family of plants, and those with any estrogen-sensitive condition should seek medical advice before taking it. Due to its antidiabetic effects, it should be taken with caution by diabetics on medication.
