The plant has become famous and got its name (catnip) because it causes euphoria and joy in felines when they smell it or roll on the plant. Its active ingredient nepetalactone exerts a mild narcotic effect (but not addictive) and in some cases proves useful in domestic cats with nervous hyperactivity.
Basic Properties: Antispasmodic, diaphoretic, expectorant, sedative, astringent
Uses: for colds, flu, coughs, bronchitis, insomnia, certain depressive conditions, indigestion, colic, diarrhea in children
How is it used?
the plant as an infusion: half to a teaspoon in a cup of boiled water for 10-15 minutes. Drink 2-3 times a day.
Special precautions:
Because Nepeta may act by causing uterine contractions, it should not be used during pregnancy.
