Pomegranate and Health

The pomegranate, a very important and well-known fruit since antiquity for its amazing medicinal properties, comes today through modern medical science to confirm and advocate with the ancient Greek doctors who considered it a miraculous fruit!

Today, modern science shows that the wisdom of the ancients was well-founded. Pomegranate is rich in vitamins C, A, E, iron, potassium and antioxidant phytochemicals such as polyphenols. It also contains high amounts of fiber while being low in calories.

Fresh pomegranate juice increases blood production , relieves fever and reduces cardiac workload . It is ideal for young children, especially if they have a cold and cough and fever. It helps with morning sickness in pregnant women and is especially recommended after intense physical exercise, in combination with grape juice.

Pomegranate against Cancer

Pomegranates have powerful anti-cancer properties. Two new studies show that they may protect women from developing hormone-dependent breast cancer and help men better cope with prostate cancer.

According to research presented at the 50th annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology, pomegranate components inhibit the movement of cancer cells by interfering with the chemical mechanism that causes them to spread.

Pomegranate against Breast Cancer

The first of the studies was conducted in the laboratory by scientists at the Hope City Breast Cancer Research Program in Duarte, California. As they write in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, laboratory experiments showed that pomegranates contain certain chemicals that protect against breast cancer, with the strongest effect being exerted by ellagic acid. This substance inhibits aromatase, an enzyme associated with the development of hormone-dependent breast cancer.

As lead researcher Dr. Xuan Chen said, "We were surprised by our finding, because until now we knew that phytochemicals from other fruits, such as grapes, have anti-cancer effects. However, the phytochemicals in pomegranates are completely different and we did not think they could have the same properties."

"Although these findings are preliminary, it would be a good idea for women to try consuming pomegranates to protect themselves from developing breast cancer, and perhaps other cancers as well," added Dr. Gary Stoner, a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Ohio State University. "There are no documented side effects from consuming pomegranates, and if their benefits are added to their cancer protection, women have many reasons to consume them."

Pomegranate against Prostate Cancer

The second study, conducted by urologists at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), showed that men with prostate cancer who drank a glass of pomegranate juice a day experienced a much slower increase in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in their blood.

PSA is a substance produced by prostate cells, whether they are healthy or have become cancerous. However, cancerous prostate cells produce it to a much greater extent, which is why PSA is used as a cancer marker.

"It is very important that the consumption of pomegranate juice slowed the growth of tumors and this slowdown was evident in PSA," commented lead researcher Dr. Alan Paduk.

In particular, as the head of the research team, Dr. Manuela Martins-Green, said while presenting her team's results at the 50th annual conference of the American Society for Cell Biology, "the new findings are exciting, as we will now be able to modify these natural components of the juice to improve their action and make them more effective in preventing metastases in prostate cancer."

Dr. Martins-Green added that she and her team hope that pomegranate juice will have similar beneficial effects on other forms of cancer. "Given that the genes and proteins involved in the movement of prostate cancer cells are the same as those found in metastases of other types of cancer, we believe that the components contained in pomegranate juice could have a much broader impact on cancer treatment."

Pomegranate against Skin Cancer

Pomegranate contains high amounts of antioxidants. The concentration of these beneficial substances for humans is 3 times higher than in red wine and green tea. Antioxidant phytochemicals protect our body from the negative effects of oxidants that are formed daily from normal cell metabolism and appear to have a significant suppressive effect against skin cancer.

The Pomegranate, an ally of the Heart

Pomegranate contains high amounts of antioxidants. The concentration of these beneficial substances for humans is 3 times higher than in red wine and green tea. Antioxidant phytochemicals protect our body from the negative effects of oxidants that are formed daily from normal cell metabolism. Antioxidants affect cholesterol metabolism, thus reducing the destructive effects of “bad” LDL cholesterol on blood vessels.

In another equally interesting study, scientists from Haifa, Israel, found that pomegranate juice reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease . By affecting the metabolism of cholesterol, especially LDL-cholesterol, the antioxidants in pomegranates reduce the risk of atherosclerosis . By reducing this risk, the risk of vascular occlusion, myocardial infarction and stroke is reduced.

Israeli scientists recommend consuming a glass of pomegranate juice a day to prevent and reduce deaths due to cardiovascular disease.

Today, the scientific community's interest in the extremely beneficial effects of pomegranate on human health has increased. Clinical studies are now underway that aim to confirm the initial findings in large numbers of people.

Pomegranate boosts testosterone

A new study reveals that men and women who drank a glass of pomegranate juice daily experienced a dramatic increase in their levels of the “sex hormone” within two weeks. This hormone is testosterone, which is responsible for sexual desire in both sexes. In addition, in men, it affects characteristics such as facial hair growth and voice timbre (the more testosterone, the deeper the voice), while in women it strengthens bones and muscles.

The study was carried out by scientists from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, who recruited 58 volunteers aged 21 to 64.

More research on pomegranate

In addition to the positive results of the studies mentioned above, you can see details of further research on the website

  • Pomegranate extract may inhibit enzymes that contribute to osteoarthritis, worsening cartilage damage.
  • Drinking pomegranate juice during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of brain injuries in infants.
  • Pomegranate extract can prevent the formation of skin tumors, at least in mice exposed to carcinogens. Furthermore, mice treated with pomegranate juice developed fewer tumors than those not treated with this treatment.
  • Concentrated pomegranate juice improves lipid levels in diabetic patients with hyperlipidemia and may improve factors responsible for heart disease.
  • Consumption of pomegranate juice for three years by patients with carotid artery stenosis reduces common carotid intima-media thickening, blood pressure, and LDL oxidation.
  • Pomegranate juice may have a positive effect against Alzheimer's disease.
