Fo-ti is a plant native to China, also found in Japan and Taiwan. The medicinal part of the plant is its root. Fo-ti is also called He shou wu, which literally means " Mr. He with black hair " in Chinese! This name refers to a legend of an ancient peasant named Mr. He who took fo-ti and maintained his black hair and a youthful appearance and vitality , who is rumored to have lived to the age of 132 !

In Western occult tradition, it is said that by using a secret formula based on fo-ti, Count Saint Germain gained the reputation of eternal youth and for this reason Frederick the Great called him " the man who never dies ". It is considered, along with the reishi mushroom, to be one of the superior tonic herbs of Chinese pharmacology.
