Rhubarb
Basic Properties: It has balancing properties for the gastrointestinal system, laxative (thanks to the anthraquinones), antiseptic and astringent (thanks to the tannins it contains) properties, cholagogue, stomachic and digestive tonic, diuretic and laxative, emollient, anthelmintic and antispasmodic
Uses: For chronic constipation (in higher dosage), very useful treatment for conditions such as diarrhea and dysentery (in lower dosage).
It is used, like milk thistle (as a decoction), for detoxification and cleansing of the body, hemorrhoids, mild liver and gallbladder problems, and even ulcers or urinary tract problems with reports such as chronic renal failure. It is also considered to help reduce cholesterol and prevent cancer, and relieve pain and itching in arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, and herpes.
It is also used to relieve and heal burns, as a local antiseptic and cooling agent, and to treat fungal infections.
Rhubarb is one of the 4 ingredients of the famous Essiac Tea
Essiac tea: one of the most popular alternative treatments (and for cancer) since 1922!
How is it used:
Rhubarb is traditionally used as a decoction (1/2-1 teaspoon/cup of water, simmered over low heat) – and in cases of constipation, a double dosage is taken (one upon waking in the morning and one before going to bed at night).
In tincture, 1-2 ml of tincture is consumed, 2-3 times a day.
