Henna powder red (Lawsonia inermis pulv)
Henna or Cyprus (according to the name of the plant in Egypt in 1500 BC) comes from the plant Lawsonia inermis, a shrubby plant native to Africa, West and South Asia, and Northern Australasia.
The common name henna comes from the Arabic ḥinnā, while the name Cyprus is considered one of the proposed versions of the origin of the name of the homonymous island. Today, the name henna also refers to some natural dyes such as black and neutral henna of completely different plant origin (botanical species indigofera and Cassia Obovata).
As a dye, henna is mixed (usually in dry powder form) with a mild (organic) acidic agent such as lemon juice or black tea in such a proportion as to create a paste with the texture of an ointment. The product is left to stand for 6-24 hours before use in order to release 3-hydroxy-1,4 naphthoquinone (lawsone), the substance responsible for the plant's coloring property and which is bound by skin proteins, for a period of several days to weeks depending on the quality of the henna and the paste product prepared for this purpose. The addition of essential oil with a high content of monoterpene alcohols, such as lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus, significantly improves the quality of the dye.

How to dye your hair with henna

  • The dose of henna is proportional to the length of the hair. For example, for short hair we use 70g. For long hair we double the amount.
  • We dilute our henna with lukewarm water, just enough to make it into mud (by eye).
Optionally, you can add vegetable oil (castor oil, coconut oil, bay oil) for additional protection and nourishment of the hair. Note: only add oil if you have not added vinegar or lemon - see below)
  • To get a more intense color , you can add 2-4 tablespoons of green tea or lemon (for blonde hair) or vinegar (for red hair).
  • After applying the henna to your hair, wrap it in cellophane or a shower cap and leave it for 1-2 hours. Wash and dry your hair. You will see the final result in two days.
  • Good luck!

Tip: If you find that your white hair is not completely covered, then you should increase the time the henna stays on your hair.
