Catuaba is the common name given to a variety of trees in the Amazon, where the bark is collected and used in Brazilian herbal medicine for sexual dysfunction and as a libido enhancer. Erythroxylum vacciniifolium is the most common Catuaba tree. Other trees such as Trichilia catigua, Juniperus brasiliensis, Eriotherca candolleana, and Anemopaegma mirandum are also called Catuaba.
The active ingredients found in Catuaba include the following: alkaloids, tannins, aromatic oils and fatty resins, phytosterols, cyclolignans, sesquiterpenes and flavonoids. The combination of these substances, as well as its centuries-old traditional use, has been a magnet for medical research studying the alleged health benefits of Catuaba.
Some of the important health benefits of Cauaba
- Catuaba may improve sexual performance
The aphrodisiac properties of this plant are, without a doubt, its most famous and popular use. It contains 3 specific alkaloids that are believed to support libido, including "yohimbe" which appears to be the most active compound that produces a stimulating effect on the libido of both men and women. These alkaloids are believed to enhance sexual function by stimulating the nervous system. Catuaba stimulates blood flow to the genitals, can strengthen and prolong erections, enhances sexual arousal and is said to give stronger orgasms . - Central nervous system (anxiety, insomnia)
Among the ingredients of this plant resides a group of alkaloids known as "catuabine", with these compounds believed to be responsible for further stimulating the nervous system. Catuaba works its "magic" quite quickly, effectively calming anxiety and nerves in less than an hour after use . It can also be used as a sleep aid - however this may increase the likelihood of having erotic dreams, so use at your own risk! - Antidepressant action
Studies have found that Catuaba has dopaminergic effects, meaning it has the ability to regulate receptors in the brain related to the neurotransmitter dopamine . A specific study conducted in 2005 by Maria M Campos et al found convincing evidence that Catuaba provides dopamine-mediated antidepressant effects in mice and rats. Furthermore, they found no significant change in serotonin uptake after long-term use of Catuaba - unlike its pharmaceutical counterpart - making this herb a powerful ally in the treatment of depression. - Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
In another study by Jean Paul Kamdem et al, Catuaba was found to have significant neuroprotective effects. This was measured by the reduced oxidative damage seen in the hippocampus of mice treated with the herb. Another study found that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Catuaba protected the brains of participants from oxidative damage and concluded that it could potentially play a role in protecting against brain-related disorders . These effects are believed to be due to the high amounts of antioxidant flavonoids found within Catuaba. - Boosts energy
Native Americans used Catuaba to revitalize their strength and combat exhaustion. - Antimicrobial & antiviral action
Catuaba has long been used to treat various skin conditions and is believed to have antimicrobial properties that prevent infection. It has also shown antiviral activity against HIV. - Memory enhancer
A decoction of Catuaba is also used to treat memory loss and forgetfulness. - Catuaba has promising activity against Parkinson's disease
A study found that Catuaba extracts have cytoprotective effects on rotenone-induced apoptosis in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. The results of this study suggest that commercial extracts from the Catuaba tree (Anemopaegma mirandum) offer promising activity against Parkinson's disease.
Dosage / Method of use:
Add 1 heaped teaspoon of powdered bark to a smoothie (it tastes great) or mix with a little hot water and honey or agave syrup depending on taste, and take once a day or as directed by an herbalist.
Special precautions
Studies and reports are insufficient to determine the side effects of Catuaba for adults. There are not enough studies to determine the safe use of the herbal medicine Catuaba during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is best to avoid its use.
