It is a genus of plants native to South America and belongs to the Rubiaceae family.

Basic Properties: antipyretic, bitter tonic, analgesic.

Uses: For therapeutic use it is used as a bitter stomachic and – traditionally – for the treatment of malaria and the common influenza virus . The alkaloids of the Cinchona plant, quinine and quinidine, are important pharmaceutical substances for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia and malaria.

How to use: According to the European Committee for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products 1 , we use 1g at a time with a total daily dose not exceeding 3g.

Special precautions:
Cinchona bark appears to be safe for most people when used appropriately as a food and beverage flavoring. However, in large amounts, cinchona is unsafe and can be fatal. 2 Symptoms of overdose include ringing in the ears, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and vision problems.
Contains quinidine and quinine. Tell your doctor if you are taking any medications to avoid interactions.
