It is a traditional plant widely distributed in tropical regions. A tea of the plant is prepared by steeping the leaves in boiling water for about 3 minutes, then adding sweetener. In Europe, it has recently become known and is consumed as an herbal tea.
It contains polyphenols, sinensetin and potassium among others.
Basic Properties: antioxidant, diuretic, choleretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antihypertensive, antifungal, antibacterial, detoxifying
Uses: beneficial for kidney function, for sand and stones in the kidneys and gall bladder, for urinary tract infections, uric acid, pain from arthritis, rheumatism & gout, blood detoxification, useful in weight loss efforts & boosting metabolism
How is it used:
the leaves as an infusion: 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of boiled water for about 3-5 minutes. Drink 2-3 times a day (the last dose at least 2-3 hours before going to bed).
Special precautions:
It is generally considered a safe herb.
Avoid during pregnancy & breastfeeding due to lack of data.
Avoid using it as a treatment for edema when fluid retention is of renal or cardiac origin.
