Cumin, (Carum carvi), Carraway, Wild Cumin

The use of wild cumin, which is botanically related to fennel, appears to date back to the ancient Arabs. The ancient Greek physician Dioscorides noted that wild cumin seeds aid digestion, relieving gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, indigestion, cramps, etc. Historically, it was also used for menstrual cramps.

Medicinally, cumin has been used to treat indigestion , nervous disorders , and colic . Wild cumin has antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties and stimulates the production of gastric juices . Two chemicals found in cumin seeds (carvol and carvene) soothe the smooth muscle tissues of the digestive tract and help expel gas.

Culinary use:
Cumin is a wild cumin with a flavor similar to mint and anise. Its seeds are used whole to flavor bread, but also in meat dishes and some types of cheese. To this day, in countries around the world, cumin is a traditional ingredient in foods such as meats and cheeses that are heavy and difficult to digest.

Special precautions:
Although generally very safe, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people with liver or gallbladder disease should not use cumin.
