Machlepi comes from a type of cherry tree, (Cerasus Mahaleb) Mahleb cherry, which grows in Asia, Africa, and Europe. In Greece, it grows in shady forests of Evia and the Peloponnese and is known as wild cherry.
Key Properties: aromatic, sedative, anti-inflammatory, vasodilator. Contains coumarin.
Culinary use: Traditionally used in the preparation of tsoureki and vasilopita. It has a sweet, oriental and deep aroma.
