Bee pollen
Bee pollen is the food that the bee deposits in the hive, which it collects during its wanderings in the flowering meadows and virgin forests of the Greek countryside. Each foraging bee approaches the flowers and harvests the pollen and nectar, which it surrounds with a special secretion of its salivary glands, transforming them into a durable ball. It carries these balls with its hind legs to the hive and deposits them in empty cells, stacking them masterfully with its head. There they are preserved as nutritional reserves for the workers and larvae (the bee's bread) to transform them in turn into their main secretion products: honey, royal jelly and propolis.
Bee pollen combines the nutritional components of pollen and nectar with the enzymes secreted by the bee to be fermented and upgraded by the yeasts and beneficial bacteria (e.g. Lactobacillus Bifidus) that coexist in their environment. The final result is never the same due to the variety of plants that the bees visit on each trip, as well as the season and prevailing climatic conditions. In general, the content of royal jelly is mainly carbohydrates (40-60%, mainly sugars fructose, glucose), proteins (about 35%, range 20-60%), a little fat (about 5% with a range of 1-32%), moisture (4-10%), and other very interesting ingredients (5-15%, vitamins, trace elements, flavonoids, carotenoids, glutathione, quercetin, etc.). Royal jelly therefore, in addition to its nutritional value, has, according to botanists, many potential benefits for human health and well-being.
Benefits are reported in the scientific literature after studies in experimental animals, which have to do with the antioxidant capacity of bee pollen, that is, the ability to bind free radicals that oxidize cellular components, with a positive effect on chronic inflammation and other localized anti-inflammatory effects. Further reported are a possible positive effect on the proper management of cholesterol, on liver function, antimicrobial action, healing action, improvement of metabolic activity (especially in relation to the absorption and assimilation of iron and calcium), a positive effect on longevity and others. A study in middle-aged women also showed benefits in postmenopausal disorders such as hot flashes, erythema, changes in mood, energy, and joint pain.
