What is it?
The Stevia plant (also known as Ka'a He'e), or "good tree", is a multi-leafed plant that grows in the difficult-to-access areas of the mountains of Paraguay and in some parts of South America.

The story
The plant was used for centuries by the indigenous people of Paraguay and it took many years for it to become known to the rest of the world. In Europe, the properties and uses of this "magical" plant were known in the 16th century by the Spaniard Francisco Hernandez, who mentioned its use as a sweetener and as a medicinal drug with therapeutic properties.

In 1887, Sandiago Bertoni reintroduced stevia to the Western world, together with his Paraguayan colleague Rebaudi, which is why its current international, scientific botanical name is Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. The word stevia for the genus was given in honor of the Paraguayan professor Stevius.

In 1931, chemists in France isolated the two most important sweeteners in stevia, namely Stevioside and Rebaudioside A, which are responsible for its sweet taste.

In 1970 in Japan, the use of stevia as a food and as a sugar substitute was approved, while at the same time the use of chemical sweeteners was banned!

On 11-11-2011, the European Union approved stevia as a food and beverage, with an acceptable daily intake of 4 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. Thus, as of 2-12-2011, by decision of the EU, its use is now legal in European countries.
