Ginger... the natural painkiller
Ginger root (which is often called ginger even in Greece) is a popular herb, which is attributed with medicinal properties, but is also used in cooking.
It is the underground rhizome of a small plant, belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, of the genus: Zingiber. The scientific name is: Zingiber officinale.
Ginger has been used since ancient times for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and for helping to relieve stomach gas.
• Contains many components that have been linked to health benefits (essential oils), such as gingerol, gingerone, shogaol, farnesin and small amounts of beta-phylladrine, cineole, and citral. Gingerols help improve intestinal motility and have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving (analgesic) and antibacterial properties. They are also considered a nerve sedative and antipyretic. Studies have shown that they can help reduce nausea as well as nausea of pregnancy and that they may help relieve migraines.
• Gingerone, which gives ginger root its pungent character, has been found to be effective against diarrhea caused by E.coli, especially in children.
• The root of the herb is low in calories, but it is a very rich source of many essential nutrients and vitamins, such as pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), which are essential for the health of the body. It is also a good source of minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium.
• Potassium is an important component of cells and body fluids, helping to control heart rate and blood pressure
