Dong Quai is an herb often referred to as female ginseng or Chinese angelica, the root of which has been used in Chinese medicine for gynecological conditions, exhaustion, and high blood pressure.
It is rich in coumarins, phytosterols, polysaccharides and flavonoids.
It has a beneficial effect on
- symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and menopause ,
- is effective in fighting vaginal infections
- helps to recover strength after childbirth or illness
- Helps with menstrual cramps
- corrects hormonal imbalance
- relieves the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Dong Quai acts as a general tonic for the female reproductive system and is used as a nutritional blood tonic as well as for regulating menstruation . Clinical research has shown that Dong Quai also contains an antispasmodic component that helps relax muscle tissue, explaining its effectiveness in menstrual cramps.
Growing research on Dong Quai suggests that there may be scientific links between the claims of traditional Chinese medicine and the individuals who have seen benefit. The proposed effects may be due to dong quai's trans-ferulic acid and its ability to dissolve in fats and oils as an essential oil. These components may have anti-inflammatory effects and reduce blood clotting.
Other people who may find benefits in dong quai are those with:
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- inflammation
- headaches
- infections
- nerve pain
- Liver or kidney problems
Possible role in cancer treatment
Dong quai extracts have the ability to stop the cell cycle and induce cell death in cancer cells. Research suggests that dong quai may potentially kill cancer cells for brain tumors, leukemia, and colon cancer. However, these properties are not confirmed in all available studies.
The herb's almost universal uses mean that both men and women take it for many reasons . Always talk to your doctor before taking the herb if you have a health condition, especially if it's serious like cancer. It can cause side effects with other medications you may be taking.
How to use: Take 1 to 5 grams per day preventively and 5 to 10 grams per day divided into three doses for therapeutic purposes.
