Kelp is a type of brown algae (seaweed) that grows in the North Atlantic, on the Pacific coast of the USA, and in the Baltic.
Key Properties: Anti-hypothyroid, antirheumatic, laxative, anti-inflammatory
Uses: It has been used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, for goiter, for obesity problems due to the thyroid gland, for constipation.
How is it used:
Kelp can be taken whole (or powdered) as a dietary supplement or in tea using 1 teaspoon (half a teaspoon) per cup of hot water after leaving it in the hot water for 10 minutes.
Up to 3 cups can be consumed per day.
Special precautions:
Kelp is generally considered safe. Iodine in any form (including seaweed) can cause or worsen acne and thyroid dysfunction.
Like all marine products, it should be free of heavy metals.
The safety of using kelp during pregnancy or breastfeeding is unknown.
