GYMNEMA (GYMNEMA SYLVESTRE) POWDER 80g - the sugar destroyer!
Gymnema (Gymnema Sylvestre, Gymnema)
Other Names: Gurmur, Sugar Destroyer, Gurmar,
Gymnema (Gymnema Sylvestre – Gymnema) is an herb from Central and South India, which translates (in English) as "Sugar Destroyer". It has been used to control blood sugar for over 2,000 years. It has been extensively studied for its leaves which contain a group of phytochemicals, gymnemic acids that have potent medicinal effects against type 1 and 2 diabetes . Its Indian name Gur-mar in precise translation means ' sugar destroyer '.
Basic properties:
Gymnema contains substances that reduce the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema can also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made. It also affects the sensation of sweetness and inhibits the sensation of sweetness for about 1 – 2 hours after consumption, in such a way that eating sugar simply gives the mouth the sensation of sand.
In summary, five mechanisms of action of the herb have been described:
- Increase in the number of islets of Langerhans in the pancreas,
- increased insulin secretion,
- increasing tissue sensitivity to insulin (reducing insulin resistance),
- reduction in the amount of food and calories consumed due to a change in the taste of sweets and a decrease in appetite,
- increased cholesterol binding in the blood and increased fatty acid binding in the intestine .
Uses:
Gymnema can be a key herb for those suffering from diabetes (type I and II). This plant appears to bring about blood glucose homeostasis, through the increase in serum insulin levels, provided by the repair and regeneration of the endocrine pancreas. It can also be used to treat metabolic syndrome as well as control your body weight.
How is it used:
Gymnema leaves as a tea/infusion: The daily dose is 1-2 teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of boiled water up to 3 times a day).
Gymnema leaves in powder form: dissolve half a teaspoon of gymnema powder in water or juice and drink 1-2 times a day
*** Take Gymnema with food .
Gymnema is known to cause stomach upset, so it is recommended to take your dose immediately before a meal . If this is not possible, try dividing your Gymnema intake into 4 small doses throughout your day.
Gymnema does not have immediate results - its consumption for a period of 3-6 months is necessary in order to see the positive results from its use.
Special precautions:
Gymnema is considered to be safe to use internally and for long periods (up to 20 months). If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor. Because gymnema can lower your blood sugar levels, be careful with its use, especially if you are taking medications or are about to undergo surgery.
