Psyllium (Plantago ovata, ispaghuala), Psyllium
Other names: Pentaneuro, Ispaguala
Native plant of India and Iran.
Basic Properties: laxative and antidiarrheal, detoxifying, reduces sugar, LDL cholesterol, emollient
Uses: Psyllium is an extremely effective herb for treating constipation (and diarrhea). The laxative properties of psyllium are due to the property of the seed shell to swell when it comes into contact with water. This creates a gelatinous mass that keeps the stool watery and soft and activates a reflex contraction of the intestine followed by evacuation.
Psyllium can improve blood sugar levels, reduce LDL "bad" cholesterol, reduce symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis, improve blood pressure
How is it used:
For the treatment of constipation, take 10-30 g of whole psyllium seeds 3 times a day (or 5 g of husks). Mix half to 2 tablespoons in water or juice and drink (before it becomes thick). Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and sometimes intestinal blockage.
Special precautions:
The use of psyllium at recommended dosages is generally considered safe.
It is important to drink plenty of water when taking psyllium.
People with chronic constipation should seek specialist advice.
Some people with irritable bowel syndrome may feel worse when taking psyllium.
People with uncontrolled diabetes should talk to their doctor before taking psyllium.
