Basic Properties:
Anti-inflammatory, antiemetic, digestive stimulant, immune tonic, stimulates blood circulation, diaphoretic, bactericidal
Therapeutic use:
for Nausea, Osteoarthritis, Headache & Migraines, Epilepsy (in combination with other herbs, Indigestion, Abdominal Bloating, Morning Sickness, Nausea and vomiting after surgery and after Chemotherapy, Vertigo
Culinary Uses: It has a peppery and lemony aroma. Dried ginger root is used for sweets, desserts, marinades and lemonades. Fresh ginger gives its unique aroma to vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, soups and rice. It is used in perfumery and distilling (Corfuians use ginger to make their signature drink, ginger beer). It can flavor your tea or beverages.
How is it used:
For general use, add half to one teaspoon of dried powdered root to a hot beverage or water.
You can also boil 1 teaspoon of fresh root in a cup of water for 5 minutes and drink whenever needed.
For nausea, 0.5 g of dried ginger powder can be taken half to one hour before travel and then 0.5 g every 2-4 hours as needed.
Children under 6 years of age should use half the amount of adults. For nausea in pregnancy, women can take up to 1 g. per day when needed and not on a permanent basis.
Special precautions:
Side effects of ginger are rare when used as recommended. Some sensitive individuals may experience heartburn.
People with a history of gallstones should consult their doctor before using ginger.
Short-term use of ginger for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy does not appear to present any safety concerns. However, long-term use during pregnancy is not recommended.
If you use Ginger, you should inform your doctor before any surgery as ginger may increase bleeding.
