Chios mastic (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia), mastic
Other Names:

Chios mastic is the name given to the resinous secretion of the mastic tree (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia). It is a natural, aromatic resin that is secreted like a tear and flows drop by drop onto the soil, from the superficial cuts that cultivators make with sharp tools on the trunk and large branches of the mastic tree.

Basic Properties: aromatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (especially its essential oil), antioxidant, anticancer, healing, analgesic, antitussive, orexigenic, aphrodisiac, astringent, erythropoietic, diuretic, expectorant, hemostatic

therapeutic use: has a healing effect on periodontitis, esophagitis, gastritis, duodenal-peptic ulcer caused by the bacterium Helicobacter Pylori, colitis, for indigestion or flatulence, hemorrhoids, reduces blood sugar and cholesterol levels

Culinary use: In Greece it is traditionally used in sweets, marzipan, syrupy cakes and tsoureki. Mastic liqueur is also famous, which is an excellent digestive. Today it is used with creative imagination in salads, ice creams, oil flavoring, creams, cakes, meat sauces. Mastic combines excellently with lemon.

How is it used:
Chew Chios mastic daily, mainly in its raw form (tears) or in the form of powder, chewing gum or mastic oil. It will give you freshness and its unique natural flavor, while it will significantly help in the prevention and maintenance of your body's health.
For your cooking, grind it with salt for your savory dishes or with sugar for your sweets. If you have previously left it in the freezer, it will crumble more easily.
