We usually use the term Cinnamon for the leaves of the plant and the term Senna for its pods/fruits.
Key Properties: strong laxative, intestinal stimulant
Uses: for the treatment of Constipation, preparation for bowel surgery
How is it used:
as an infusion the pods (fruits) or leaves: Soak 3-6 leaves/pods in hot water for 6 hours,
It takes effect after 10-12 hours. So we usually drink it at night so it will take effect the next morning.
Special precautions:
Because it is a strong intestinal stimulant it can cause colic pain. You can combine it with Ginger or Fennel Seed.
for symptom relief.
Use for a short period of time, a maximum of 10 days, and then use diet or other milder and less addictive herbs.
The safety of senna during pregnancy and breastfeeding is controversial.
Avoid especially during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Senna is recommended for children under 10 years of age.
Senna should not be used by people suffering from Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, intestinal diseases.
