Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis), Goldenseal

It is a native plant of eastern North America and was used by Native Americans for irritations of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urinary systems. Today it is cultivated in Oregon and Washington. In the wild it is threatened by overharvesting.

Goldenseal is one of the plants with the highest concentrations of the active compound berberine . Berberine has a variety of functions inside cells. One of the main functions is the activation of an important enzyme called AMPK, which regulates metabolism. Some studies show that berberine can contribute to significant weight loss , while improving many other health indicators.
Studies also show that berberine reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels , while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels . Although more research is needed, it may reduce the risk of heart disease in the long term.
Preliminary studies suggest that berberine may have benefits against depression, cancer, infections, fatty liver, and heart failure . It also has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Berberine has been shown to help lower blood sugar and HbA1c. It may be as effective as some diabetes medications.

Therapeutic use: useful in digestive problems such as gastritis, septic ulcers, colitis, in upper respiratory catarrh, colds, sore throat, in mouth ulcers, for conjunctivitis and blepharitis, urinary tract infections.

Tincture dosage:
Add 8 to 10 drops of Goldenseal tincture to a little water, and drink up to three times a day.
Shake well before use.

Special precautions:
Goldenseal in the above dosages is generally considered safe. Avoid using goldenseal during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
