It is an excellent natural preservative, and is also used as an acidity regulator and flavoring ingredient.
Citric acid is used as a flavoring and preservative in foods and beverages, mainly non-alcoholic ones (e.g. lemonades).
As a food additive, it is labeled with the code E330. Citric acid is considered safe for use in food and is not carcinogenic.
It is a normal component of cells, is degraded and used by the body without side effects.
