The dried calyxes of the plant, which have a cone-like shape, are placed in pairs, after first removing the seed from one, and they are placed upside down in oil and lit. The flame is kept burning all night and does not create smoke.
THERAPEUTIC USES:
The plant exhibits antispasmodic properties and is administered mainly in cases of whooping cough in children and against psychoneuroses. Its main ingredients are flavone glycosides, chlorogenic acid, traces of essential oil and diterpene lactones and acts as an anti-rabies antibacterial, tonic, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, antioxidant and antispasmodic. It is used in depression, anxiety and hysteria while it is a suitable remedy for nausea and vomiting, when the cause is located in the nervous system and not in the stomach. It even relieves vomiting during pregnancy.
In homeopathy it is used for cough, insomnia and nervous system disorders. It also reduces cholesterol levels and purifies the blood while at the same time relieving itching from mosquito bites. For therapeutic purposes, the leaves and flowering tops of the plant are usually used and for its antispasmodic properties it is mainly administered in cases of whooping cough in children and against psychoneuroses.
The antimicrobial activity of the plant was documented by Çanakkale University, Çanakkale, Turkey.
The antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, and cytotoxic properties of the plant were studied and documented by the Universities: Université du Droit et de la Santé Lille, France and Catholic University of Louvain, Wallonia, Belgium.
The plant's high flavonoid content was documented by the Near East University of Cyprus. Flavonoids have antispasmodic, antiallergic, diuretic and anthelmintic effects. Their contribution to human health has been proven in many cases to be beneficial, as they activate enzymes that reduce the likelihood of certain types of cancer, heart disease and degenerative diseases associated with aging.
